Spells are flying across the room as cloaked figures ride in the night. Is it Harry Potter and his friends roaming around? Sadly no, but what is the next best thing besides the guy with the thunderbolt scar? A Harry Potter themed conference! District Convention 2012 will be sporting brooms, pumpkin juice and potions. From February 24th through the 26th, come take the train with the Ministry of Magic of the Florida District to beautiful Tampa, Florida. With the beginning of the academic year, most CKI members have been concentrating on their studies and serving in their CKI Clubs. However, some very active students from Saint Leo University and Palm Beach State College have been busy building up their membership to charter their respective CKI Club.

Cassy Anselme, President at Saint Leo University, stated, “I am very excited, and I hope that more people will be interested in joining our club.

Robert Dillingham, Kiwanis Club Advisor for Palm Beach State College, stated, “The club is off to a great start because of the excellent leadership qualities of their executive officers and the tremendous professional expertise provide by their Faculty Advisor, Professor Leonie Escoferry.Note: Palm Beach State College submitted its chartering information and was received by Kiwanis International on October 12th.

As you can see, the Florida District is building new opportunities for leadership development through service around the state. Please encourage your friends that attend this colleges to check out what service projects are going on in their community through CKI.

Another CKI Club in the making is St. Johns River State College. The past-Key Club member who is getting the club going is attending Kiwanis events and has secured Kiwanis sponsorship. With these three new CKI Clubs, the Florida District will charter 4 new clubs- 2 in the Miami area, 1 in the Orlando area, and 1 in the Gainesville area.

All of these great strides cannot be possible without the enthusiasm of the students and the motivation and drive from the local Kiwanis Clubs!

If you have any questions or know someone who would like to charter a CKI Club, please e-mail JJ Sadler at clubbuilding@floridacirclek.org!

We are excited to welcome Florida International University (FIU) to our Circle K International family! Governor Carly Henry and Club Building Chairman JJ Sadler recently traveled down to Fort Lauderdale to meet with the club, where they elected their officers and received information about the Florida District and Circle K International. Citrus Lieutenant Governor Timothy Wolfinger will be assisting them in formal training next month.

The Florida District would like to extend a special thanks to the Kendall-South Dade Kiwanis club, sponsors of FIU CKI, and to the dedicated students who are working hard to ensure a successful year for the club!

Hi Florida District!

Hope you all are enjoying your summer! Below you will find the two Alumni Association Scholarships for the 2011-2012 year. All dues paid members who fit the additional requirements are able to apply for these great scholarship opportunities!

Sophie Laval Scholarship:
Sophie Laval was an extremely active member of the Flagler College Circle K Club who died while traveling to the 1988 Circle K International Convention.  Her legacy is forever exemplified due to her involvement with Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) and that she educated Circle K members of the dangers of driving drunk.  The Florida District Alumni Association awards a $1,000 scholarship in her memory to a deserving Circle K member who demonstrates both scholarship and contributes service to the community. Applicants must have completed at least 150 hours of service in the past CKI year with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Uncle Don Scholarship:
At the 2007 Florida Circle K District Convention, the “Uncle” Don Knowles scholarship was created in honor of one of the Florida District’s biggest supporters. A 22 year member of the Sunshine City Kiwanis club in St. Petersburg, “Uncle” Don began his involvement with Circle K in 1985 at the USF St. Petersburg Kiwanis advisor.  He was the first Assistant Administrator for the Florida District of CKI in 1989 and has been honored with several well deserved awards at both the District and International level. Applicants must have completed at least 250 hours of service in the past CKI year with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.

New Website

The Florida District of Circle K is in the process of changing the design of the website. The structure will remain nearly the same with new and updated features. Further, there will be a new look. Please be patient as this process will not be finished until June 15th.

Thanks!
